Interesting how bad things (not getting our planning permission for a passivhaus on the Isle of WIght) led us to give up on those past years among the English (as I put it now).

We're off to dinner with some young folk who took a shine to us at a writers' conference in our (now) home town a few weeks ago. Last week, we were in Belfast for Irish Yearly Meeting (Quakers) getting to know (a lot more) friendly folk in this part of the islands. We've found our 'Toronto' it seems.

Write when you're ready. In our new time in (Northern) Ireland these past 4 weeks, I had one instance where the difference in the place struck me: It was in talking with a legislator (Sinn Fein) in his constituent office...

I had mentioned my leaving the US and a bit about why. He just glowed as he told me of his story of the US. As you've been to London, I can confirm that THIS reaction to the mention of the USA is NOT the standard British reply to its existence.

Americans are welcome in Ireland; not so often in Britain. It's the why that's fascinated and I believe it all goes back to 'whose side you're on'. The USA is seen as a place of pluck, a place that 'threw off the oppression of the King' to the Irish -- something they themselves wanted to do for ever so long, and then finally accomplished in the early 20s.

But the British response (subconscious as it is) might show more often a deep hurt, a resentment, of the upstart colony that finally bested the British Empire in the 20th century. These dormant, veiled histories matter in how people know, communicate & interact with the other.

Canadians are a bit skeptical of American interests at times as its history notes that the early American interest in liberty for itself also expressed itself as that of attempting -- several times -- to 'liberate' Canadians from the British Empire (a bit prematurely as it worked out).

Canadians learned & lived with another version of history's imprint, and it, too, colours how they see America & Americans.

I love these subtle discoveries of cultural bias rooted in historical learnings, the prejudices of a people taught in its public education systems.

I think of this as I think of Russia today. We think we understand Russian 'aggression' but refuse to look at a once-young nation that lived by 'manifest destiny' toward its West and those lands already occupied by the First Peoples.

The USA is a new world of natal prejudice, just as those countries of the old.

Have fun! I am.Jacob Dugan-Brausehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06287631724339961459noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4211773395857840723.post-35366313342734121022022-04-07T04:25:35.834-08:002022-04-07T04:25:35.834-08:00This comment has been removed by the author.Jacob Dugan-Brausehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06287631724339961459noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4211773395857840723.post-31636326629623529692022-03-11T01:04:07.722-09:002022-03-11T01:04:07.722-09:00This was lovely to readThis was lovely to readNicola Coxhttps://www.nicolacox.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4211773395857840723.post-53498489876662821172022-03-01T02:39:47.585-09:002022-03-01T02:39:47.585-09:00Grateful for shaaring thisGrateful for shaaring thisNicola Coxhttps://www.nicolacox.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4211773395857840723.post-3442006923737998162022-02-23T22:43:48.568-09:002022-02-23T22:43:48.568-09:00This comment has been removed by the author.Jacob Dugan-Brausehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06287631724339961459noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4211773395857840723.post-77018342716889384002022-02-21T09:50:41.891-09:002022-02-21T09:50:41.891-09:00You are absolutely right! You are absolutely right!CloudyinAKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04354513104617596508noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4211773395857840723.post-86927143093176868112022-02-20T21:39:28.535-09:002022-02-20T21:39:28.535-09:00You neglected to mention what a wonderful product ...You neglected to mention what a wonderful product "Better than Bouillon" is. I was kicked in the feels (had to look that one up) as an ex-American who found he still gives a damn.

But your situation isn't about the state of the State, is it? It's how you (and all of us) choose to live in it. You know, that philosophical stuff.
